ABSTRACT

@#<p><strong>BACKGROUND:</strong> Domestic animals are known to be either maintenance or accidental hosts of Leptospira. Determination of seroprevalence of leptospirosis among these animals is of great importance due to their close association with humans, economic loss as well as the public and veterinary health problems caused by the said zoonosis.</p><p><strong>OBJECTIVE:</strong> This study aimed to determine the seroprevalence of leptospirosis among water buffaloes, pigs, and dogs in selected areas in the Philippines.</p><p><b>METHODS:</b> Microscopic agglutination test (MAT) was used to test for leptospirosis. Testing was done from January 2007 to August 2008.</p><p><strong>RESULTS:</strong> With the cut-off titer set at 1:80, the MAT-positivity rates were 82%, 67%, and 79% for 190 water buffaloes, 45 pigs, and 106 dogs, respectively. The most common prevailing serovars detected were Hardjo, Tarassovi, and Hebdomadis for water buffaloes; Semaranga, Grippotyphosa, and Patoc for pigs; and, Manilae, Patoc, and Autumnalis for dogs. MAT-positivity rates among these animals in terms of age (except for water buffaloes), sex and sample collection sites were not statistically significant. No Leptospira was isolated from the blood, urine, and kidney samples of these animals.</p><p><strong>CONCLUSION:</strong> Results indicate a high seroprevalence of leptospirosis among the animals studied and that several pathogenic leptospires are causing infection in these animals.</p>

ABSTRACT

The domestication of water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) originated in India and China and spread throughout the world and represents an important source of food of high biological value. Given the importance and relevance of brucellosis for buffalo production, this article reviews the history, etiopathogenesis, epidemiology, clinical signs, anatomopathological findings, diagnosis and control of the disease, focusing on data from studies on water buffaloes performed in different countries and the Brazilian Amazon biome.(AU)


A domesticação do búfalo (Bubalus bubalis) ocorreu particularmente na Índia e China, difundindo-se pelo mundo, gerando fontes de alimento de alto valor biológico. Diante da importância e relevância da brucelose para a bubalinocultura este trabalho tem por objetivo fazer uma revisão acerca do histórico da doença, etiopatogenia, fatores epidemiológicos, sinais clínicos, achados anatomopatológicos, diagnóstico e o controle, com enfoque nos dados obtidos em estudos em bubalinos no mundo e no Bioma Amazônico brasileiro.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Animal trypanosomiasis is a disease caused by parasites of the genus Trypanosome. This malady is widely distributed in many countries, located in tropical and subtropical areas of the world where blood-sucking flies are present. Water buffaloes are important domestic animals used for meat and milk production, and draught power. Buffalo herds are raised in areas where trypanosomiasis is endemic. In Venezuela, the buffalo industry is becoming a very important and common livestock. However, animals imported from non-endemic areas may suffer severe infections. The development of methods which ensure an efficient epidemiological surveillance against this disease is of great relevance. The immunological tests are of great importance for this purpose, because of the low sensitivity of the current parasitological methods, due to the low parasite burden that occur in subclinical and chronic infections caused by trypanosomes. To estimate the serological prevalence of trypanosome in water buffaloes, an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used in buffalo samples of healthy animals from the municipalities of Rómulo Gallegos, Ricaurte and Girardot, in the State of Cojedes, Venezuela. Additionally, samples were also assessed with the indirect fluorescence antibody test (IFAT) and the microhematocrit test (MHCT). A total of 180 blood samples, none of which had an active parasitemia by TMC, were assessed. The prevalence determined by ELISA was 45.56%, which was significantly (P<0.05) higher than that obtained by IFAT (28.89%). The results of the experiments showed a moderate Kappa index of concordance of 0.45 (95% CI: 0.31-0.58); whereas the concordance value for both tests was 73.33%. Both the sensitivity and specificity of ELISA, compared to the IFAT, was 82.69% and 69.53%, respectively. The predictive positive and negative values were 52.44% and 90.82%, respectively. The findings suggest an endemic condition, with moderate infection values caused by Trypanosoma spp. in buffaloes from these regions of Venezuela and show, for the first time, the usefulness of ELISA for epidemiological studies of trypanosomiasis.

ABSTRACT

Samples of ten penises of Mediterranean buffaloes and ten penises of Red Sindhi cattle were used. The thickness of the tunica albuginea (TA), distribution of smooth muscle cells (SMC) and volume density (Vv) of elastic system fibers in TA, corpus cavernosum (CC) and corpus spongiosum (CS) were evaluated. The Vv of elastic system fibers in buffalo and bovine penis was respectively 4.07% ±0.88% and 3.36% ±1.21% in TA; 17.32% ±2.21% and 13.14% ±1.27% (CC), 26.58% ±4.31% and 31.36% ±3.67% (CS). The CC of buffalo presented higher Vv of elastic fibers than bovine, while in the CS the Vv of elastic fibers in buffaloes was smaller than in cattle. The TA thickness showed a significant difference among the species studied. The arrangement of SMC in the bovine penises and in the water buffalo suggests that this pattern is common to animals that have fibroelastic penises.


O pênis dos zebuinos e bubalinos são classificados como do tipo fibroelástico, sendo grande parte de sua rigidez conferida pelas fibras colágenas e elásticas presentes na matriz extracelular. Embora alguns estudos tenham abordado estes componentes em bovinos europeus, os dados na literatura sobre zebuínos e bubalinos são escassos. Nós avaliamos a espessura da túnica albugínea, a distribuição das células musculares lisas e a densidade volumétrica (Vv) das fibras do sistema elásticona túnica albugínea, no corpo cavernoso e esponjoso do pênis de animais jovens adultos inteiros.Foram utilizados 10 fragmentos de pênis de búfalos da raça Mediterrâneo e 10 fragmentos de pênis de bovinos da raça Red Sindi. Os fragmentos de pênis foram processados de acordo com a técnica histológica de rotina para inclusão em parafina e corados pela Fucsina Resorcina de Weigert, Picro Sirius Red, Tricrômio de Gomori e anticorpo anti α actina. As fibras elásticas foram determinadas em 25 campos aleatórios de cada fragmento, utilizando o sistema teste modelo M42. A Vv das fibras do sistema elástico no pênis do búfalo e bovino foram(média e desvio padrão respectivamente) de 4,07% ±0,88 e 3,36% ±1,21 na túnica albugínea; 17,32% ±2,21 e 13,14% ±1,27 no corpo cavernoso; 26,58% ±4,31 e 31,36% ±3,67 no corpo esponjoso, respectivamente. Houve diferença na Vv das fibras elásticas entre as duas espécies, no corpo cavernoso e no corpo esponjoso. Na espessura da túnica albugínea houve diferença significativa entre o búfalo Mediterrâneo (1,4mm ±0,11) e o bovino Red Sindi (1,76mm ±0,23). Nas duas espécies, as fibras musculares lisas foram encontradas apenas associadas ao endotélio de revestimento dos seios cavernosos. Com base nestes resultados, podemos concluir que existem diferenças na proporção entre os componentes da matriz extracelular nas espécies estudadas, fato que deve ser considerado nos procedimentos clínicos e cirúrgicos veterinários e continua a ser investigado.

ABSTRACT

La cría de búfalos de agua (Bubalus bubalis) se ha convertido en una ganadería cada vez más importante y común en nuestro país; sin embargo, afecciones como las gastroenteritis parasitarias representan una de las limitantes en el desarrollo de esta especie, provocando un impacto negativo sobre la producción cárnica y lechera. Los principales agentes etiológicos responsables de esta afección son los estróngilos digestivos (Nematoda: Strongylida) y coccidias del género Eimeria (Sporozoa: Eucoccidida). Con el objetivo de determinar el comportamiento de estas infecciones, se evaluaron mediante exámenes coprológicos mensuales a través de la técnica cuantitativa de McMaster, búfalos de cuatro grupos etarios (bumautes entre 8 y 18 meses de edad, bumautes mayores de 18 meses, sementales y búfalas), de ambos sexos, pertenecientes a un rebaño comercial del estado Falcón. Los estróngilos digestivos y las coccidias fueron los más prevalentes, con 25,2 y 46,2%, respectivamente. La abundancia del rebaño fue de 38±41,1 huevos por gramo (HPG) de heces para estróngilos y de 142,4±117,2 ooquistes por gramo (OPG) de heces para coccidias. Hubo diferencias estadísticas (p<0,05) al comparar los valores de prevalencia y abundancia de las infecciones por estróngilos digestivos y coccidias entre los grupos etarios y el sexo. Los valores de prevalencia y abundancia disminuyeron con la edad de los animales evaluados (estróngilos: prevalencias de 39,5; 34,0; 42,3; 15,8% y abundancias de 79,8; 47,2; 30,8; 12,2 HPG; coccidias: prevalencias de 71,3; 54,8; 38,5; 34,0% y abundancias de 379,1; 121,0; 44,2; 47,6 OPG), siendo superiores en machos que en hembras (estróngilos: prevalencias de 36,2 y 22,4%, y abundancias de 70,5 y 30,9 HPG; coccidias: prevalencias de 57,3 y 43,6% y abundancias de 166,3 y 131,5 OPG, respectivamente). Las mayores cargas parasitarias y las infecciones de importancia clínica se observaron en los bumautes entre 8 y 18 meses de edad (contajes mayores a 500 HPG y 5050 OPG). Las condiciones climáticas se encontraron en rangos favorables (25,6-29,3ºC, 77,0-89,0% de humedad relativa y 1,0-151,3 mm de precipitación) para el desarrollo de las formas preparasíticas de estróngilos digestivos y coccidias.


The breeding of water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) has become an increasingly important and common livestock in Venezuela; however, conditions such as gastrointestinal parasitism are one of the major constraints in the development of this species, with a negative impact on meat and milk production. The main etiologic agents responsible for this condition are digestive strongyles (Nematoda: Strongylida) and coccidia of the genus Eimeria (Sporozoa: Eucoccidida). This investigation evaluated the behavior of these infections in buffaloes of different age and sex. Samples were collected and examined monthly by the quantitative McMaster technique. The buffaloes were subdivided into four age groups (animals between 8 and 18 months of age, over 18 months, males and female buffaloes), the animals came from a commercial flock of the State of Falcon, Venezuela. The results show that the most prevalent parasites were strongyles and coccidian, 25.2% and 46.2%, respectively. The flock abundance was 38±41.1 eggs per gram (EPG) for strongyles and 142.4±117.2 oocysts per gram (OPG) forcoccidia. There were statistical differences (p <0.05) between age groups and sex of the buffalo, when comparing the values of prevalence and abundance of infections for gastrointestinal strongyles and coccidia. The prevalence and abundance values decreased, with increasing age of the animals tested (strongyles: prevalence of 39.5; 34.0; 42.3; 15.8% and abundance of 79.8; 47.2; 30.8; 12.2 EPG; coccidian: prevalence of 71.3; 54.8; 38.5; 34.0% and abundance of 379.1; 121.0; 44.2; 47.6 OPG), being higher in males than in females (strongyles: prevalence of 36.2 and 22.4%, and abundance of 70.5 and 30.9 EPG; coccidian: prevalence of 57.3 and 43.6% and abundance of 166.3 and 131.5 OPG). The highest parasitic loads and the clinically important infections were seen in 8 to 18 months old buffaloes (counts higher than 500 EPG and 5,050 OPG). Environmental conditions fell within favorable ranges (25.6-29.3ºC of temperature, 77.0-89.0% of relative humidity and 1.0-151.3 mm of precipitation) for the development of infective parasite forms of both digestive strongyles and coccidian.

ABSTRACT

O objetivo do estudo foi conhecer a prevalência sorológica de Toxoplasma gondii em búfalos (Bubalus bubalis) do Estado do Pará, Brasil. Foram selecionados randomicamente 319 bubalinos distribuídos em sete municípios da Ilha do Marajó. Para efeito comparativo também foram avaliados 128 bubalinos pertencentes a cinco municípios do Estado do Pará. A prevalência sorológica de Toxoplasma gondii foi avaliada pelo Ensaio de Imunoadsorção Enzimático Indireto (iELISA). As amostras diagnósticadas como positivas no iELISA foram submetidas a Reação de Imunofluorescência Indireta (RIFI). Foram avaliados os fatores de risco: localidade, raça, gestação, co-infecção por Brucella abortus e co-infecção por Mycobacterium bovis. As frequências de animais positivos no iELISA para T. gondii foram comparadas pelo teste de Qui-quadrado (χ2) com 95% de confiabilidade. As variáveis com p<0,2 foram submetidos à análise de regressão logística, sendo o modelo construído baseado no teste da "odds ratios". A prevalência de T. gondii observada no iELISA foi de 41,6% (186/447). Na RIFI, 86,5% (161/186) das amostram positivas no iELISA tiveram sua positividade para T. gondii confirmada. A prevalência média nos municípios da Ilha do Marajo e do Continente foi de 32% (103/319) e 55% (70/128), respectivamente. Os municípios que apresentaram as maiores prevalências foram Soure (53%) e Salvaterra (49%) na Ilha do Marajó e Castanhal (55%) e Tailândia (50%) no Continente. Os fatores de risco raça e co-infecção por Brucella abortus ou Mycobacterium bovis não influenciaram na prevalência de T. gondii. Além disso, animais gestantes foram 57% mais positivos para T. gondii do que animais não gestantes. A circulação de anticorpos é um indicativo da presença do agente da toxoplasmose em búfalos no Estado do Pará. Esses achados representam um risco não apenas para os animais de produção, mas à saúde pública, como uma fonte de infecção.


The aim was to study the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) from State of Pará, Brazil. Three hundred and nineteen buffaloes were randomly selected into seven municipalities of Marajó Island. For comparative purposes, 128 buffaloes of five municipalities in the state of Pará were also evaluated. The seroprevalence of T. gondii was evaluated by Indirect Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (iELISA). The samples diagnosed as positive in iELISA were subjected to Immunofluorescence Antibody Test (IFAT). We evaluated risk factors: location, breed, pregnancy and co-infection with Brucella abortus or Mycobacterium bovis. The frequency of animals positive for T. gondii in iELISA were compared by chi-square (χ2) with 95% confidence. Variables with p <0.2 were subjected to logistic regression analysis; the model was built based on the "odds ratios" test. The prevalence of T. gondii in iELISA was 41,6% (186/447). In IFAT, 86,5% (161/186) had their positivity for T. gondii confirmed. The average prevalence in the municipalities of the Marajó Island and of the mainland was 32% (103/319) and 55% (70/128), respectively. The municipalities with the highest prevalence were Soure (53%) and Salvaterra (49%) in Marajó Island, and Castanhal (55%) and Thailândia (50%) in the Continent. The breed and co-infection with Brucella abortus or Mycobacterium bovis presented no influence on the prevalence of T. gondii. Additionally, pregnant animals were 57% more positive for T. gondii than nonpregnant animals. The presence of antibodies is an indicative of T. gondii in buffaloes in the state of Pará, and these findings represent a risk not only for farm animals, but to public health as a source of infection.

ABSTRACT

Atrioventricular valve complex of 30 Jafarabadi water buffaloes, adult males were studied in this research with no heart diseases. The animals were obtained from a slaughterhouse in Brazilian State of Parana. The hearts were opened at the third portion affording access to the valve complex. The complexes had its area, number and type of tendinous cords submitted to analysis. The results showed that the complex is composed by two cusps and four accessory cusps, two or three papillary muscles in which 10-25 tendinous cords fix on the cusps that face the ventricle wall. The total area of the complex was on average 38.56cm², with a minimum of 24.96cm² and a maximum of 55.54cm². Statistically, no relation between the number of cords and the cusps' area where they are inserted or with the number of papillary muscle where they originated from was observed.


Foram estudados os complexos valvares atrioventricular esquerdo de 30 búfalos da raça Jafarabadi, machos e adultos, sem alterações cardíacas, provenientes de abatedouros do Estado do Paraná. Os corações foram examinados em seu terço médio para acesso ao complexo valvar, que foi submetido a estudos de área, número e tipificação de cordas tendíneas. Os resultados demonstram que este complexo é formado por duas cúspides principais e quatro cúspides acessórias, apresentam em sua formação de 2-3 músculos papilares, nos quais se inserem de 10-25 cordas tendíneas, que se fixam em cúspides voltadas para a parede do ventrículo. A área total deste complexo apresenta uma média de 38,56cm² com um mínimo de 24,96cm² e um máximo de 55,54cm². Estatisticamente não há relação entre número de cordas e a área da cúspide onde estas estão inseridas, nem com o número de músculos papilares dos quais elas provem.

ABSTRACT

Descreve-se um surto de intoxicação por organofosforados (ORFs) em búfalos (Bubalus bubalis) na região sul do Rio Grande do Sul. Os animais foram submetidos à aplicação de Expertan® pour-on (clorpirifós) na dose de 12mg/kg de peso animal para controle de infestação por piolhos e desenvolveram sinais clínicos de intoxicação em um período variável entre 7-45 dias após a exposição ao produto. Os sinais clínicos caracterizaram-se por anorexia, diarréia, salivação intensa, incoordenação motora, tremores musculares, paresia e paralisia flácida, decúbito lateral e morte. Em conseqüência da intoxicação morreram 61 búfalos de um total de 267 animais sob risco. Foram realizadas três necropsias de búfalos que morreram 24-72 horas após o início dos sinais clínicos. As lesões macroscópicas caracterizaram-se por congestão e hemorragias intestinais, enfisema e edema pulmonares. Não foram observadas alterações microscópicas significativas em nenhum dos animais. Apesar da ausência de alterações histológicas no sistema nervoso central e periférico, os achados epidemiológicos, clínicos, macroscópicos e toxicológicos sugerem o diagnóstico de neurotoxicidade tardia induzida por ORFs.


This paper describes organophosphate (ORF) poisoning in a herd of water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) in southern Brazil, which were treated with a single dose of 12mg/kg body weight of Expertan® pour-on (chlorpyriphos) to control ectoparasites. Clinical signs, observed 7-45 days after exposure, were diarrhea, hypersalivation, ataxia, muscular tremors, weakness of pelvic limbs, paresis and flaccid paralysis and lateral recumbence. Out of 267 buffaloes 61 died. Necropsy of three animals that died 24-72 hours after onset of clinical signs, revealed congestion and serosal hemorrhages scattered along the bowel, emphysema and edema of the lungs. No significant histopathological changes were found. Residues of chlorpyriphos were detected in liver, kidneys and nervous system of the one necropsied buffalo. Despite the absence of histological lesions in the central and peripheral nervous system, the epidemiological, clinical, gross and toxicological findings suggest delayed neurotoxicity induced by organophosphates.
